Syrian rue, or Peganum harmala, is a desert plant which has been grown and used throughout the Middle East for centuries. It was used in ancient Iran mainly to ward off the evil eye. By burning it as incense, the smoke was said to avert any misfortune. It has been used for other ritual in North Africa as protection against demons and as medicine. The inebriated state it caused was said to bring benefit to the user and was used as a protection from danger.
