Kanna, or Sceletium tortuosum, is a plant that has been historically used by the Khoikhoi and the San tribes for medicinal, social and spiritual purposes. Originating in South Africa, the tribes would chew the fermented plant to enhance their moods and rid themselves of fear and anxiety. The Khoikhoi’s also used kanna in their spiritual healing dances to help them induce visions.
